The Rolex Cellini found its origins in 1968 as the watchmaker created a line of non oyster models named after Benvenuto Cellini who was an Italian goldsmith, sculptor, and author. Cellini’s best-known extant works include the Cellini Salt Cellar, the sculpture of Perseus with the Head of Medusa, and his autobiography, which has been described as "one of the most important documents of the 16th century”.
This collection saw over half a century in production until the majority were quietly discontinued in 2022, all bar the rose-gold moonphase model. This final model bowed out last year and marked the end of the Cellini - replaced with the very divisive Perpetual 1908, likely to be the spiritual successor to the Cellini collection but with more consistency between model designs.
This example, a rare reference 4136 from 1995, bears all of the hallmarks of 90’s dress Rolex, an era now past. An elegant and timeless curved rectangular case shape in 18k yellow gold, paired with a deep blue dial with a sheen which changes the tone from almost-black in lower lights to a striking navy in daylight.
Rolex just doesn’t make watches like this anymore, it has cues of vintage 70s/80s Cartier and Piaget all over but with the distinction of coming from the crown. Own a piece of Rolex history while you can…
