One of the most high-class and elegant designs from legendary designer Gérald Genta (of AP Royal Oak, Cartier Pasha, Patek Nautilus fame), the King Midas might be (James says it is…) the coolest dress watch Rolex ever made.

A collection which adorned the wrists of John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Bond villain Fransisco Scaramanga (The Man With The Golden Gun), this watch became the heaviest gold watch in production when it first arrived in 1964. Named after the Greek mythology’s infamous king whose touch turned anything to gold, this design truly deserved its name, carved from a single block of gold, and could well be the ultimate gold watch of all time.

Aside from its obvious material identity, this collection was characterised by its asymmetrical case inspired by the Parthenon temple (turn it sideways!) and unique strap which joined to the case in a taper not unlike how an integrated bracelet may look. The original King Midas models were limited editions originally, but in the 1970s they were continued in new runs under the “Cellini” family umbrella, where this example hails from.

This example is presented in very good vintage condition with its original box and booklet, on a new matching leather strap with its original gold buckle and two lightly used leather straps included too. This is the pinnacle of cool vintage gold Rolex, sports models move out the way, the King is here!
