Originally launched in 1963 as the Cosmograph, as a manual-wind chronograph for race timing, the Cosmograph Daytona obtained its full name in the next couple of years when Rolex became the official timekeeper for the famed Daytona NASCAR race.
This remained a fairly low-production and unpopular model until the first automatic Daytona launched in 1988, after which sales began to soar and it became cemented as the coveted series that it is today. This was further propelled into history’s halls of fame in 2017 when a vintage model reference 6239 owned by actor Paul Newman sold for $17.8m, the most expensive wristwatch ever sold. Daytona’s are known for being unobtainable through Rolex authorised dealers the world over.
This modern example is presented in almost museum-grade condition. The combination of steel, gold and the rarer, discontinued, grey dial is something truly special. This complete set is made even more desirable by the inclusion of arguably the best vintage Rolex box to date, more paperwork and manuals than you could ever want and even a hanky to dry your eyes when you inevitably cry after seeing it for the first time…
…ok, maybe a little too much.
Anyway, this is an incredibly capable watch regardless of whether you spend your days timing Olympic sprints or just how long your eggs have been cooking - don’t miss out!
