The Rolex Explorer II is one of the Crown’s most unique watches, with its design copied and “homaged” by several names big and small but nobody coming close to anything similar, yet original.
Initially launched in 1971 as the ref. 1655, the Explorer II suffered lacklustre sales due to its somewhat niche target, cave explorers and spelunkers (a great word, by the way, heavily underused).
Updated in 1985 and then again in 1989 to the 16550 and 16570 respectively, it underwent a true evolution into something resembling its current form today. Changes included the usual movement and case refinements but most notably the dial transitioned from blocky markers and hands to more Rolex-esque rounded markers and “mercedes” hands with a now-red 24-hour hand rather than orange. The 16570 then remained in production until 2011…
Enter the 216570, which ran until 2021 but remains largely the same in its current 226570 to the naked eye, save for minor case/bracelet refinements and internal adjustments. 2011’s update saw the case increase from 40mm to 42mm, an update to the numbering font on the fixed bezel, the return of the original 1655’s orange 24-hour hand and the inclusion of Rolex’s Chromalight lume within the hands and markers, shining in crisp blue in the dark and a stark white during the day.
This example is a full set with all original box and papers, in excellent pre-owned condition with a smooth wind and near-immaculate polishing and also features the less-common, more desirable stark white “polar” dial. Complete with our 3-month warranty and authenticity guarantee at a market-crushing price and available today, what more could you want? Modern Rolex with a wealth of juicy watchmaking heritage.
