The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most recognisable watches in the world, and with good reason. Over its many years in production since 1954, it has been a prime example of Rolex’s development process - that is, staying much the same in 2023 as it was over half a century prior, but with incremental changes and advancements that keep it contemporary with each new reference.
Initially designed for Pan Am Airways as a pilot’s watch, the purpose was to allow tracking of both the local time and UTC (GMT), the time zone designated for all flight planning and scheduling. Over the years it has seen a multitude of visual and mechanical changes but largely serves the same purpose as it did in ‘54.
Today, it is a symbol of luxury as one of the most flexible watches in Rolex’s lineup whether that be travelling, the office, playing golf, or just those special moments between yourself and your favourite timepiece in the bath…
This reference, the 116710BLRN, was introduced a little over ten years ago and saw the first use of the blue and black bezel combination (hence BLNR - Bleu/Noir) which has earned it the “Batman” moniker after the caped crusader’s occasional blue & black getup. Featuring a quick-set hour hand, patented Cerachrom bezel, and a clean black maxi-dial, this is one of the most modern, functional and, let’s be honest, coolest Rolex models out there.
This example from 2017 is a complete set with box and papers, in immaculate condition is available at a market-cruching price just under £12,000, you won’t beat it in the UK!
