Everyone knows what a Speedmaster Moonwatch looks like but not everyone knows the treasure that is  the “Mark” series Speedys. This example is not just a reference from that special family but one of the most unusual and rare in this already unusual collection.

The most commonly-recognised reference, the Mark II, was first on the scene in 1969 resulting from a NASA prototype codenamed “Alaska”, boldly presenting its trademark tonneau-shaped or “cushion” case with the tachymetre scale applied directly under the crystal.

This collection developed over the next 15 years culminating in 1984’s Mark V, which featured the Lemania 5100-based Cal. 1045 automatic movement, the very same movement found in the ref. ST 376.0822 Speedmaster, often nicknamed the “Holy Grail” owing to its incredible rarity.

That same movement is also found in this example, known colloquially as the Speedmaster Mark 4.5, as it features visibly the same case as the Mark IV but with the legendary movement from the Mark V. More interestingly, it is simply known as a Speedmaster Automatic and does not officially follow the “Mark” naming convention.

History lesson aside, this watch is packed with interest, with traditional time function, small seconds, a 24-hour GMT effect sundial, the traditional chronograph seconds hand, and connecting chronograph subdial. In addition, it has the added benefit of a day and date display at 3 o’clock and the aforementioned tachymetre scale where you would expect to find it, albeit applied under the crystal rather than the bezel.

Presented on its original steel bracelet that almost appears integrated, combined with the tonneau shaped case - this is a classic 70s/80s look that will catch the eye of novices and watch nerds alike and is a truly fascinating piece of watch history. It also looks fantastic on a rubber or leather strap for that extra flexibility on style!

Serviced last in 2023, this watch is in great honest condition overall, showing its years of reliable service but robust enough that it doesn’t need any special treatment and is ready to wear today for any occasion. Paired with Omega’s classic red 70s/80s box design for the finishing touch. This is the perfect watch for the Omega fan who doesn’t just want “another Speedmaster”.
