The Speedmaster Automatic 3520, referred to as the Day-Date by Omega or commonly nicknamed the “Mk40”, is among the more complex and quirky of the Speedmaster’s long and varied history.
This example comes from a line of so-called “Reduced” models, owing to their smaller case size of 39mm but still based on the twisted lug Professional style case.
These are revered by collectors for their obvious and attractive differences to the traditional Speedmasters, and much more wearable case size which is incredibly comfortable, but retaining all the weight and presence of any other Speedmaster.
The dial is of course the major talking point with 8 hands and 3 subdials in the 6, 9 and 12 positions, plus a date track around the circumference complemented with day and month windows in the top 30 minute totaliser subdial.
At the 9 position we have a 24-hour subdial directed by the large arrow hand, plus a small seconds stick hand. Meanwhile at the 6 position we have the hour totaliser subdial.
Overall this is an incredibly detailed and complex watch, that comes across as oddly charming and a treat to sit and stare at. This is a LOT of watch for the modest sum it is priced at; and you’re unlikely to come across another in Guernsey, to boot!
