This Must de Cartier Tank is a great entry point into the world of vintage Cartier, offering more affordable access to one of history's most iconic watch designs - the Cartier Tank. These watches retain many of the Cartier Tank signatures, like the classic Roman numeral dial, cabochon sapphire crown, and blued steel hands. They are sized suitably for both men and women, and can be worn everyday.
First launched in 1976 as part of a new push of pens, wallets and other accessories that were felt would bring in new customers, the Must De Cartier Tank was their first wrist watch in a non-precious metal - silver with gold plating or “vermeil”. It cost just $500 at the time and was just Cartier DNA through and through.
This was also Cartier’s first “mass-produced” wristwatch, which took their approx 3000 watches total produced per year to the next level.
This example is one of the humbler of the many dial variations that emerged, but in our opinion it is THE classic dial. Excellent vintage condition throughout and rarely, if ever polished with strong gold plating remaining on the whole case. The dial shows a mild spider effect in the right light but has held strong so is invisible to the naked eye, which we think is pretty cool. Call it the Stealth Spider™.
